While researchers are constantly making new developments in the fight against cancer, there are several steps which experts agree we can all take to help reduce our risk factors for developing cancer.
Stay tobacco-free.
All types of tobacco use has been linked to a higher incidence of cancer. Smoking has been linked to lung, mouth, throat, larynx, pancreas, bladder, cervix and kidney cancer. Chewing tobacco has been linked to oral cancer and pancreatic cancer. Even secondhand smoke has been linked to an increase in the risk of cancer. Choose a healthy diet.
Consider these healthy diet tips to help reduce your risk factors for cancer:
Avoid eating too many high-calorie foods, refined sugars or fat from animal products.
If you drink alcohol, do it in moderation. The risk of many cancers increase with the amount of alcohol you drink and the length of time you’ve been drinking.
Limit processed meats. According to the World Health Organization, large amounts of processed meat can increase the risk of some cancer.
Eat a Mediterranean diet focused on plant-based foods, like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts. The Mediterranean diet also includes healthy fats such as olive oil over butter, and fish instead of red meat.
Maintain a healthy weight.
Research indicates that keeping yourself at a healthy weight may lower the risk of some cancer, like breast, prostate, lung, colon and kidney. Physical activity is also important in weight management, as well as riding your risk of certain cancers. For the best results, aim to reach at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity.
